To advance the Technology Center’s access and diversity goals, the scholarship and grant program is designed to promote the value of diversity in the educational setting and in the workplace.  It is also designed to recruit students in underrepresented groups or for non-traditional training.

The winners of the grants wrote brief essays regarding access and diversity in school and were highly recommended by their instructors. The award money may be used by the student for any cost or expense required to complete the student’s educational goals.

02/10/12 - Go Red for Women

Tennessee Technology Center at Covington students participated in a “GO RED for Women” event at the school February 3rd. In 2004, the American Heart Association created Go Red for Women to raise awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of women.  This emotional and passionate campaign was designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

As part of the Go Red Day at the Technology Center, the Practical Nursing Education Class took the blood pressure of other students, faculty and staff.  The nursing students discussed what the blood pressure numbers meant and recorded the information for the “patients”. Part of the Go Red for Women program is designed to educate women on cardiovascular risks such as high blood pressure and cholesterol.  Students and faculty were given heart healthy recipes and were treated to healthy fruit juices.

Retired United States Army nurse, Nan Hill of Brighton, conducted an interactive program on the use of exercise bands, and walking tapes. Mrs. Hill, who is a spinning and Boot Camp instructor at the Covington Sportsplex, stressed the importance of 30 minutes of exercise a day for heart health. Students and faculty were provided bands and participated in the exercises led by Mrs. Hill.

Male students and faculty were urged to participate in the Go Red for Women to educate themselves on heart health for women and to support the women in their lives by eating correctly and exercising with them.

Drawings were held at the end of the program for memberships to the SportsPlex, ATC Fitness, fitness equipment, exercise tapes, cookbooks and red home decor donated by Hometown Flowers and Old Town Hall.

The Tennessee Technology Center at Covington plans to make this an annual event.
