Practical Nursing Program

This program provides the student with academic and clinical experience. The program is built upon a demanding curriculum emphasizing dedication and a caring attitude. A Registered Nurse provides supervision and instruction for the students. Licensure may be awarded to qualified applicants by the Tennessee Board of Nursing contingent upon a passing score on the National Council Licensure Examination for the Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN).

Topics of study include: Vocational Relations, Advanced Vocational Relations, Anatomy and Physiology (A&P), Nutrition and Diet Therapy, Nursing Fundamentals, Pharmacology, Administration of Medications, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Basic Emergency Nursing, Maternal and Child Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, and Psychiatric Nursing/Mental Health Concepts.

A practical nurse cares for ill, injured, convalescent, or handicapped persons. Most practical nurses are employed in hospitals, mental health facilities, clinics, private duty, nursing homes, assisted living, schools, prisons, industry, or home health. Some competencies required a practical nurse regarding patient care include: vital signs; preparing for surgery, performing a physical examination, assisting with diagnostic testing, categorization, tracheotomy care, monitoring oxygen, assisting with personal hygiene, assisting with nutrition, administering prescribed medication, and maintaining a clean and healthy patient environment.

Upon completion of this course a student will be prepared for entrance into one of the many challenging and profitable areas of nursing like home health, hospitals, doctor's clinic, or nursing home.
